What causes a bunion

There is a common misconception that bunions are the result of wearing badly fitting shoes and the bunion pain you suffer is the price you pay for trying to be stylish.  While badly designed and fitting shoes are bad for the feet and do cause numerous problems they are not the real reason behind the development of bunion foot.

People get bunions because of a defect in the mechanical structure of their foot. This is often genetic and if bunions run in your family, it is likely that you will be prone to them. The original defect in the foot’s bone formation is usually so small as to be not noticeable but it can increase with the passage of time, and wearing badly fitting shoes can make the condition worse.

This explains why some people get bunions and others with apparently similar shaped feet who wear similar shoes do not. This is not to say that people who are not genetically inclined to get bunions can wear badly fitting shoes with no concern. They too will have problems. But bunions occur when there is a pre existing disposition towards them.
